Any Good Sign-Up Bonus Cash Credit Cards?

May 22nd, 2013 at 02:57 pm

We are looking to possibly subsidize our Central Air purchase with a decent sign-up bonus credit card. Anyone know of any decent ones?

I already have Chase Sapphire ($400 back after $3,000 spend in 3 months) and Chase Freedom ($300 back after $500 spend in 3 months [the good offer!]).

My wife has yet to sign up for any, but Chase Freedom changed their bonus to $100 + 0% On balance Transfers for 15 months and 0% on Purchases for 15 months after $500 spend in 3 months.

The central air quotes back on 6/2011 for the install of central air were $2,100 - $2,350 depending on the manufacturer of the unit, so I am hoping they are still around those numbers. I will know when I meet with the company tomorrow on how much prices have changed in 2 years. A Chase Freedom card in DW's name might work for this.

The Chase Freedom card, unless there is another someone can recommend (looking for cash bonus mostly), sounds like it is top choice. Unfortunately, at least $1,000 of the EF would be used for this if we purchased outright and the EF currently sits at $6,000. However, being the Chase Freedom card is offering 0% for 15 months on purchases, we could float a month or two and cash flow the purchase until July 2013 since there would be no interest. Knowing me, I would just pay in full anyway and be done with it, but I do like to see the EF stay consistent.

Any thoughts?

I likely missed it but have you already improved the insulation factor? Operating AC adds considerably to electric bill. I'd check with provider to see if they offer a discount for cash payment. If you chose to use card offering 0% interest you leave a major benefit on the table by paying it off in July. With the stock market leaping there is profit potential for Index or Dividend MF in 15 months for example.

snafu: The home is a 1960, 800sf, 2 bed, 1 bath ranch with R30 insulation in the attic (recommended R60 here in NY these days), windows brand new in 2011/2012 fiberglass double pane with low e3 glass, walls,... well, unless we re-do the siding and add blown-in insulation in the walls, what is in the walls will have to do for now. I do admit, the attic could use another layer of R30, which I have priced out to do it myself at less than $300. There will be the added expense of increased electricity usage, but I don't see it increasing more than $400 a year (compared to not using any air conditioning) or so as we ran a $10,000 BTU window unit the last two years and maybe increased our yearly electricity bill by $200. The 2 Ton central air unit (24,000 BTU) I would expect 2 billing cycles (4 months total) to be around an additional $200 total for the 4 months above compared to using just the window unit. It also all depends on the difference in temperature outside and the set inside target temperature. Also, yeah, I realize if we do anything of such with a 0% card and pay it off in 1-2 months that we are missing out on potential savings in other saving vehicles, but I like to run with little debt as possible. I already feel squirmish about floating a small amount and cash flowing for the 1-2 months as it is! Thanks much! I would also hold off on the central air, but I don't want to drill any holes in our brand new windows to place the unit in, but we would also be subsidizing the cost more by selling that unit for hopefully around $250.

This site shows several offers. Could your wife sign up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card? It still has the $400 spending $3K.

Sorry, no wish to make you uncomfortable...just expressing some thoughts in the form of feedback. I had a vague recollection you planned a DIY insulation project but I likely muddled it.

CCF: She could sign up for the Chase Sapphire card, but I think we will save that for new appliances or replacing the basement windows a little later in the year!

snafu: You didn't cause any discomfort! I enjoy reading your responses! Sorry if I sounded sarcastic above!

Gotcha...you have a plan! There really aren't any spectacular offers out there in my opinion, but any reward, even $100 is something.

Unless you can get one of those business cards, I think many of the better offers are gone for now. It was the Chase Sapphire Preferred card that wouldn't issue me an immediate approval for some reason. Most of the others seem to be $100 bonuses. Have you checked out the Southwest card?
